Becker’s Hospital Review 137 healthcare entrepreneurs to know

For seriously ill patients, American health care is among the best. One of the reasons is the serious commitment to innovation by corporations in the healthcare field.

Entrepreneurs Improving Healthcare Quality

According to Becker’s Hospital Review there are 137 entrepreneurs in the healthcare space who are innovating in the medical, IT, consumer and medical professional fields.

Bernoulli’s CEO, Janet Dillione,  is one of them.

Bernoulli is  focused on real-time connection in health care with more than 1,200 systems installed. The flagship platform is Bernoulli One™, a real-time, end-to-end connected healthcare platform combining comprehensive and vendor-agnostic medical device integration with powerful middleware, clinical surveillance and telemedicine, among other applications.

The Patient Safety Movement’s goal ZERO preventable deaths by 2020

patient safety movement pledge

There are still gaps in the continuity of care but the Patient Safety Movement is making progress. A report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality stated that an estimated 1.3 million fewer patients were harmed in U.S. hospitals between 2010 and 2013, and that an estimate of 34,530 deaths were prevented in 2013. This resulted in a cumulative cost savings during the period analyzed as being approximately $12 billion.

As inspiring as this news is the improvement falls short of the goals set which aimed to reduce preventable hospital-acquired conditions by 40% by the end of 2014. Hitting that mark would mean 1.8 million fewer harms, 60,000 fewer deaths and savings of as much as $35 billion.

Now two years later, the Patient Safety Movement believes, more than ever, that the elimination of preventable deaths is an obtainable goal if hospitals, medical technology companies, clinicians, and the government share data that can identify at-risk patients. By providing specific actionable solutions, healthcare professionals can identify and meet the challenges, as well as, promote patient dignity, and empower providers.

Janet Dillione, CEO of Bernoulli has pledged Bernoulli Health to this goal. By taking this pledge, Bernoulli and 61 other companies are working towards making a difference  to help reverse the tide of preventable patient deaths.

Bernoulli to Attend AAMI Foundation National Coalition for Alarm Management Safety

Bernoulli to Attend AAMI Foundation National Coalition for Alarm Management Safety

Bernoulli will take part in the AAMI Foundation’s National Coalition for Alarm Management Safety meeting July 20-21. Bernoulli CIO John Zaleski will be in attendance, as well as representatives from two of Bernoulli’s customers—the Connecticut-based Hospital for Special Care and New Jersey-based Virtua.

The goals of the meeting include determining the unmet needs in hospitals struggling to improve alarm management that the coalition should address, and what deliverables can be developed to fill those needs. In addition the coalition will continue to:

  • Build a common taxonomy around alarm signals and alarm conditions that industry, clinicians, and nursing orgs agree to adopt so all may communicate more effectively about alarms.
  • Build and populate a cloud-based database to generate improved algorithms for alarms and smart alarms.
  • Build national database to collect device alarm parameters contributed to the database by the participating hospitals.
  • Develop new tools and resources for improving alarm notification to reduce alarm fatigue.

Managing Ventilator Alarms and Data

Bernoulli’s

Alarm management is constantly  evolving to meet the the needs of the hospital patients and clinical staff alike.

Using Bernoulli One™, the Hospital for Special Care (HSC) has empowered their clinical staff with real-time surveillance capabilities for more than 100 patients on ventilation support and has reduced the total number of ventilator alarms by an estimated 80%, helping achieve compliance with both Phase I and II of the Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goal on clinical alarm management, as well as the four associated Elements of Performance (EPs).

Jeanne and Connie’s byline on ventilator alarm reduction, based on our HSC case study, was just published in Advance Healthcare Network for Respiratory Care & Sleep Medicine.

Learn more of how HSC reduced alarms on 100+ ventilators by 80 percent!

From L-R: Mary Logan, President AAMI; Marilyn Flack, Exec Director, AAMI Foundation;
John Zaleski, Executive Vice President and CIO, Bernoulli; and Phil Cogdill, Chair, AAMI Foundation Board of Directors.

“Bernoulli’s level of partnership and involvement in working with the foundation and its stakeholders demonstrates its commitment to improving patient safety,” said Marilyn Flack, Executive Director of the AAMI Foundation. “I am very grateful to the Bernoulli team for their help in working to prevent patients on opioids from experiencing poor outcomes due to undetected opioid-induced respiratory depression and for their help in working to reduce non-actionable clinical alarms.”

Bernoulli is a premiere partner with the AAMI Foundation and works closely with the foundation and its stakeholders on two important patient safety initiatives: National Coalition for Alarm Management Safety; and the National Coalition to Promote Continuous Monitoring of Patients on Opioids.

Alarm management and continuous monitoring for patients on opioids are two of the top patient safety priorities in healthcare today. Bernoulli supports hospitals and health systems in their efforts to achieve full compliance with the Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goal on clinical alarm safety and also enables continuous, real-time surveillance of patients connected to virtually any medical device.

Jeanne Venella talks about alarm fatigue on RN FM radio

203 Episode of RN FM Radio,

The Alarming Truth at the Bedside of Nursing with Jeanne Venella, DNP, Chief Nursing Officer of Milford, CT-based Bernoulli,

is an informative, funny, personable, and extensive discussion of the issue of alarm fatigue, the risk for patients, the process and governance needed to address it and the capabilities of Bernoulli One to not just manage alarms but actually reduce them.  The best part of the interview is probably when one of the nurse hosts mentioned that by 2020, hopefully all nurses/hospitals will have Bernoulli in place to ease their alarm woes
